BEES that appear to be standing around doing nothing are actually protecting their hive from heat shock. At any one time, over half the bees in a colony do not seem to be doing any useful work, says Philip Starks of Cornell University. But when he and colleague David Gilley heated up the sides of test hives they found that most of these idle workers rushed to shield the brood chambers and honey stores with their bodies (Naturwissenschaften, vol 86, p 438).
